Every year many people discover club volleyball for the first time and have many questions. While this will not answer all of them, we hope we can address many of the common questions.
Q. WHEN DID SVA BEGIN AND HOW HAS THE PROGRAM GROWN?
A. SVA began in May of 2016 after our founder was led to change careers from a Physics Professor to a Coach/Club Director. She started the club from nothing and we have grown by the grace of God since then. We are looking to develop character through volleyball for years to come. You are welcome to reach out to any of our athletes parents and they can share what it is like to be part of SVA.
Q. DOES MY ATHLETE HAVE TO ATTEND THE TRYOUT AT THE LOCATION THEY HOPE TO PRACTICE AT?
A. No, players are welcome to try out at either location for the team they choose. Upon arrival at tryouts on one of the forms you will tell us your preference. Also, we do our best to accommodate each athletes preference, but we hope that you will trust our judgment regarding which team your daughter is placed on.
Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JUNIOR OLYMPIC (JO) AND LOCAL TEAMS?
A. Junior Olympic teams compete in more competitive events and compete through mid to late June. Most of the events with be in the Atlanta area, however most JO teams will attend one or two events out of town depending on the age group. They should compete in approximately 1 or 2 tournaments per month. Local teams compete in events located in the Savannah area (no more that 2.5 hours away) only and the season runs through mid-April. We also offer a beach season from May-July as well as special clinics throughout the season.
Q. SHOULD MY ATHLETE TRYOUT FOR JUNIOR OLYMPIC OR LOCAL?
A. Athletes who wish to compete at the highest level possible and aspire to compete in college should tryout at the JO level. If your athlete attempts to try out for the JO level and the staff feels they are not ready, we will have them try out for Local. At this time we offer Local teams in Statesboro and Effingham and our JO team is out of Effingham.
Q. HOW DO THE COACHES EVALUATE THE ATHLETE’S DURING THE TRYOUT?
A. Our staff is looking for work ethic, a positive attitude, a team mentality, confidence, and humility with the younger age groups (14/13/12/11/10). Height and skill are certainly a plus but not required. In addition to the above, athletes in the older age groups (18/17/16/15) are being evaluated for their skill.
Q. HOW MANY ATHLETES WILL THE CLUB SELECT?
A. SVA would love to take all athletes, but we are limited to space and a certain number of coaches. The number of teams per age group is based on the number of athletes attending the tryout and talent pool available. The JO teams (18/17/16/15/15) will have no more than thirteen athletes per team. The Local teams will have no more than fourteen players. However, in most cases, we prefer to have ten players per team.
Q. DO YOU GUARANTEE ALL ATHLETES TO PLAY?
A. Unfortunately, there is never a guarantee. We are here to train your daughter in practice and they should receive about the same amount of practice as the rest of the team. Your daughter’s court time during tournaments is typically determined by work ethic, a positive attitude, a team mentality, confidence, humility, and skill. Players competing on a 12/11/10 or any Local team will play in a minimum of two sets (games) per tournament as long as there are no issues with the athlete. I.e. following our code of conduct, attending practices, dependability, good attitude, etc.
Q. Hi Ashley – Good morning! I am interested in having my daughter try out for the 12U Volleyball local Effingham team. My only hesitation is cost. I see that costs are estimated if 10 girls are on the team, just worried if not enough girls tryout or on the team how it will affect our cost?
A. Thank you so much for reaching out. We are so happy to hear that you are considering trying out and working with us this upcoming season. With that, the maximum about for that your total would increase is $100, but I don’t expect that to happen. If that does happen and it is an issue, please let me know and we will see what we can do to fundraise and find a scholarship for her.
